"What is Ear Curation? A Derby Piercer's Guide"
12 May 2026
Ear curation is the art of designing a balanced, beautiful piercing arrangement. Here's what it really means — and what happens in an ear curation appointment at White Thorn Piercing in Derby.
If you've heard the phrase "ear curation" floating around Instagram and weren't quite sure what it meant — you're not alone. Ear curation is one of the fastest-growing areas of luxury piercing, and at White Thorn in Derby it's the heart of what I do. This guide explains what curation actually is, what makes it different from just "getting a piercing", and what to expect if you book an appointment with me.
So, what is ear curation?
Ear curation is the practice of designing a piercing arrangement as a complete, considered look — rather than adding one piercing at a time without a plan. A curated ear is balanced, intentional, and built around your anatomy, your lifestyle and your style.
Think of it the way a jeweller thinks about a stack of rings, or the way a stylist composes an outfit. Every piece has a purpose. The placements work together. The jewellery flows from lobe to helix in a way that feels effortless when it's finished — even though the planning that went into it was anything but accidental.
It's the difference between a piercing and a piece of wearable art.
How is curation different from a regular piercing appointment?
A traditional piercing appointment usually goes: you decide what you want, you pick a piece of jewellery from what's available, you get pierced, and you go home. Nothing wrong with that — it's how most piercings happen.
A curation appointment is different in four ways:
- It starts with your whole ear, not a single placement. We look at your existing piercings (or empty canvas), your anatomy, and the look you're hoping to build over time.
- The jewellery comes first, the piercing second. We choose pieces from our luxury collections — Junipurr, Buddha Jewelry, and others — that work together visually before we mark any holes.
- It's planned in stages. Rarely do we pierce a fully curated ear in one sitting. A curation is often built across two, three or more visits, allowing healing time between piercings and giving you the chance to live with each addition before adding the next.
- It's longer. A curation consultation can take an hour or more, where a standard piercing might take fifteen minutes. The time is in the design.
What happens in a curation appointment at White Thorn?
When you book a curation appointment in the Derby studio at 46 Curzon Street, this is what to expect.
First, we talk. Bring photos that inspire you — Pinterest boards, screenshots, Instagram saves. We'll ask about your day-to-day: do you wear glasses, headphones, your hair up? Do you sleep on one side? What does your style tend toward — minimal and modern, romantic and detailed, bold and statement? Every one of these answers shapes what we'll recommend.
Then, we look at your ear. Anatomy varies more than most people realise. A piercing that looks beautiful on one person may not sit well on another simply because the cartilage is shaped differently. We assess what's possible and, just as importantly, what we'd advise against.
Next, we choose jewellery. We'll pull pieces from our cabinets and hold them up to your ear so you can see how they'd look in place before committing. This is the part most people don't expect — it can feel a bit like trying on outfits. It's also the part most people love.
Finally, we make a plan. Sometimes that's a new single piercing and another in three months. Sometimes it's a swap of existing jewellery rather than a new hole, and sometimes we make plans for 6-7- new piercings over a year or even two. There are no piercings on the day, so you can go home and think about everything, as there can be a lot to take in — it’s a clear roadmap for the next year of your ear's evolution.
Choosing the right jewellery for a curated ear
The jewellery is what turns a piercing into a piece of body styling. We stock pieces we'd happily wear ourselves, from brands that meet the strictest safety and craftsmanship standards.
The two brands at the heart of our curation work are Junipurr — solid 14k gold and implant-grade titanium ends made in Canada, beloved for everyday wear — and Buddha Jewelry Organics, whose statement designs are perfect when you want a single piece to anchor a curation.
You can browse what's currently in the studio in our online shop, though I always recommend coming in to see them in real life. Photographs only tell you so much — the way gold catches the light, the proportions on your own ear, — these only land in person.
How many piercings do you need for a curated ear?
There's no required number. A curated ear can be three piercings or thirteen.
What matters is intention. A single lobe and a well-chosen helix can be as elegantly curated as a full constellation across both lobes, the conch, the daith and the helix. Curation is about how the pieces talk to each other, not how many there are.
That said, most clients who come to me for a curation are working toward somewhere between four and eight piercings per ear, often built over six to eighteen months as each one heals.
Healing and maintenance
A curated ear is a long-term project, and healing time is part of the design. Lobe piercings typically settle in around 12 - 20 weeks. Cartilage piercings — helix, conch, daith, tragus, rook — take much longer, often nine to twelve months to fully heal. Rushing it shows.
I give every client written aftercare guidance at the end of an appointment, but you can read our full aftercare guide and my healing times page any time. Both are written from a piercer's experience, not copied from a leaflet.
How much does ear curation cost?
The piercing fee for a curation appointment at White Thorn Derby, is the same as a standard piercing — you can see my current piercing prices. What varies is the jewellery, which is priced individually depending on the brand, gold weight, and any stones.
As a rough guide, you can build a beautifully curated ear with quality 14k gold pieces from around £80–£250 per piercing including jewellery, with statement pieces and diamond ends going higher. I'm happy to talk through budgets before you book — there's no minimum spend and no pressure.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to have piercings already to book a curation appointment?
No. Many curations start with a fresh ear. If you've never been pierced before, we'll go gently and build the foundation together.
Can I get all my piercings done in one appointment?
Usually not — and not because we don't want to, but because your body doesn't. Doing too many piercings at once overloads healing and increases the risk of irritation or migration. A genuine curation is paced, not rushed.
Can I bring my own jewellery?
For safety reasons, I only pierce with jewellery from brands we trust. Once you're fully healed, you're welcome to bring pieces in for us to fit and check.
What if I already have piercings I'm unhappy with?
That's one of the most common reasons people come in. I can often improve the look of an existing piercing dramatically just by changing the jewellery, or recommend healing-out and re-piercing in a more flattering placement. There's almost always a path forward.
How long does a curation appointment take?
A consultation alone is usually 30–45 minutes. A consultation plus piercing tends to run 60–90 minutes. I don't rush — your appointment is yours.
